1 - Tourism owned by the community
Local communities should own and collectively run local tourism enterprises (accommodation, food, tours etc).
2 - Tourism for the community
Local communities are the main beneficiaries of the tourism activity, which exists to support community development. Tourism is an opportunity rather than a threat.
3 - Main atraction = local livelihood
Tourist attractions equal local communities' own livelihoods such as their social, political, cultural and economic realities and traditions.
4 - Cultural exchange
Tours and activities aim to promote meaningful exchange between visitors and visited communities on an equal basis.
5 - Environmental conservation
Tours and activities are structured from the perspective of valuing and conserving local natural resources.
6 - Ethical transparency in the use of resources generated by tourism
Communities and visitors are openly informed of the destination of
financial resources generated through the tours.
7 - Social partnership with travel agencies
All parties involved in the tourism chain must incorporate community-based tourism principles by valuing local livelihoods and enabling visited communities to equally participate in the distribution of profits.
